Good Bones was designed to provide simple, durable, environmentally friendly kitchen joinery for New Zealanders.
The designer, Christina Mackay, is an interior architect and academic at Victoria University of Wellington.
The need for ‘Good Bones’ arose following research into history of kitchen joinery in New Zealand and the life-cycle and disposal issues of plastic-coated MDF (medium density fibreboard) box system joinery.
More information on this research can be found in a 2010 paper ‘Kitchen Remodelling in New Zealand – issues of sustainability’ and Christina’s National Radio Sunday Morning interview with Chris Laidlaw.
In the search for an alternative approach, Christina designed and fabricated a prototype in her own kitchen.
Viclink, Victoria University of Wellington’s commercialisation office, recognised the potential of the design. Following consultation with industry, patent applications have been lodged both in NZ and internationally. These patents are pending.
Viclink is presently seeking potential commercialisation partners.
